Two-day Midwest coverage from a Cincinnati DC

A Cincinnati-area warehouse is not 'central' because a map says so. It is two-day truck coverage to a long list of plants and retailers — if you staff the dock and book the freight like you mean it.

  • Transportation
  • Distribution
  • Midwest

"70% of the U.S. population within 500 miles" is a true sentence and a lazy operating plan. What a shipper can sell is more specific: from a Greater Cincinnati or Northern Kentucky dock, a large share of Midwest plants and retailer DCs are a one- or two-day truck — if the order is released on time and the carrier is booked like a grown-up.

This is the coverage story without the brochure.

What two days usually means from this node

On dry van, with a morning ship:

  • Day 1: Columbus, Indianapolis, Louisville, Lexington, Dayton, much of Ohio and Kentucky
  • Day 2: Chicago, Detroit, Nashville, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, much of Indiana, Tennessee, lower Michigan, West Virginia

That is the useful list. It is not "everywhere." Denver and Dallas are not two-day problems from Cincinnati unless you are paying for something that is not a standard truck.

Cincinnati as a hub is about that first- and second-day ring plus rail and river for the long inbound. Northern Kentucky tilts the same ring south on I-75.

The warehouse is half of the promise

A two-day service level dies in the building:

  • Waves that start after the carrier's cutoff
  • Appointments the 3PL did not know about
  • Inventory that was "in the building" but not counted to a pickable location
  • VAS that was sold as same-day and staffed as next-week

Public warehousing can hit two-day if the order is in the system and the SKU is pickable. Contract warehousing can hit it more consistently because labor is not shared with every other client in the aisle. Neither hits it if transportation is an afterthought.

Transportation has to be on the same campus conversation

Truckload and LTL from the same operator as the warehouse is not a nicety. It is how you stop a 4 p.m. "we need this on a truck" from becoming a next-day pickup. Intermodal is for the long inbound or a long outbound, not for faking two-day into a market that is four days by rail.

If you use a national broker for every outbound, you can still make two-day work. You will spend more time in email.

Where the promise breaks

  • Retailer DCs with tight delivery windows. Two-day transit plus a three-day appointment backlog is not two-day service. See retailer compliance.
  • Peak. Capacity disappears. Peak playbook is a coverage document as much as a labor document.
  • Weather and the river cities. Have an alternate door in the network — Fairfield vs. Walton — so one iced ramp does not kill the week.

How to write it in an RFP

Do not ask "do you cover the Midwest?" Ask:

  1. Cutoff time for next-day and two-day by destination cluster
  2. Which locations ship which clusters
  3. On-time ship for the last 90 days on those clusters
  4. Who books the truck

A Cincinnati DC earns the national conversation when that two-day ring is boringly reliable. That is the product. The map is just the reason the product is possible.
